How To Disable WGA For Good

WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) is an anti-piracy system from
Microsoft that is used for validation of a Windows OS when connecting
to several Microsoft Services, such as Windows Update.

If the Windows OS is an illegal copy, the problem is manifested as a
nag screen that is located in the lower right corner of the screen with
the text ‘You may be a victim of software counterfeiting’. Also, a similar
nag screen is visible on Windows login screen:

There is no easy way to remove this nag screen and Windows Genuine
Advantage, and we’ll try to describe the easiest way.

Easy Way To Disable WGA

The easiest way to disable WGA is to deny access to its files. Why?

Because if access is denied for all users that can use this file, the file cannot be executed.
Normally in Windows, you have these users:

‘BUILTIN\ADMINISTRATORS’
‘BUILTIN\USERS’
‘NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM’
‘NT AUTHORITY\AUTHENTICATED USERS’

The normal way to deny access is to use Windows Explorer to open the
C:\Windows\System32 folder and find three files that WGA uses – WGATray.exe, WGALogon.dll and LegitCheckControl.dll. Right-click on each file, go to Properties->Security, click on each listed user, click on Deny All and Apply.
But, since there is no Security tab, this can’t be done so easily.

Until now, of course. :)

Instead of disabling access to these files via Windows Explorer, use these simple command prompts:

1. Start->Run
2. Write ‘cmd’ and press Enter (or click OK)
3. Write ‘cd C:\Windows\System32’
4. Write the following commands:
a. ‘cacls wgatray.exe /d everyone’; when asked if you’re sure, click ‘Y’
b. ‘cacls wgalogon.dll /d everyone’; when asked if you’re sure, click ‘Y’
c. ‘cacls legitcheckcontrol.dll /d everyone’; when asked if you’re sure, click ‘Y’
5. Reboot the machine (Start->Shutdown->Restart)

Please note that for Windows Vista you should use iCacls instead of Cacls command.

These files can be deleted, but don’t delete these files because it’ll stop
Windows copying new files to this location. If you leave the files that
cannot be accessed, then Windows cannot overwrite them - plain and
simple logic.

That’s it folks, WGA is disabled. Happy auto-updating and everything
else you want to do.

P.S. This guide can be used also when fighting with malware that cannot
be deleted in the normal way.

Speed up web browsing with OpenDNS

When you type in a domain name such as wingeek.com in your browser the computer must resolve the friendly name into an IP address of the server to download the web page and supporting files. Windows uses a DNS (domain name system) server to lookup this information. By default, Windows uses your ISP’s DNS server. Depending on your provider, the performance of their DNS resolving server varies. Some large national providers are known to provide unreliable and slow DNS servers.
The performance of the DNS server you are using is one component that affects the speed of your internet browsing. Since each domain name you type in must be resolved into an IP address, the amount of time that takes will delay the loading of any web page. Some users with overloaded ISP DNS servers can see delays in multiple seconds before web pages start to load.
OpenDNS provides free alternative DNS servers that anyone can use with any internet provider. Unlike many national internet providers, OpenDNS’s DNS servers are very fast and reliable. Using OpenDNS servers instead of your ISP servers will help you speed up your internet browsing by cutting down on the delay between resolving a domain name and getting the IP address so your browser can start loading the web page.
Configuring your computer to use OpenDNS servers instead of your ISP’s is a simple change that works in both Windows XP and Windows Vista:
1. Click on the Start Button and type in ncpa.cpl and hit Enter. In Windows XP Click on the Start Button, click Run and then type in ncpa.cpl
2. Right click on your active network connection that you use to connect to the Internet and select Properties.
3. On the Networking / General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) (version 4 on Windows Vista & 7) and hit Properties.
4. On the properties screen, select Use the following DNS server addresses and then type in 208.67.222.222 in the preferred and 208.67.220.220 in the alternate boxes.
5. Hit OK twice and you are finished.

Unlock Hidden Windows 7 Themes

There are a number of regional themes with multiple unique background images hidden from Windows 7 users. On a Windows 7 install with United States regional settings only the United States theme is shown but there are actually four more themes hidden from view. Below are all the regional themes included in Windows 7:

Accessing all the themes is easy to do once you know where to find them. The trick is to navigate to the C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT directory. The MCT directory within the Globalization directory is super hidden so it will not display even if show hidden files and folders is enabled. Just click on the address bar of any folder and manually type in or copy and paste in C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT and hit Enter.

Once you have reached the MCT folder you will see five directories as listed below:
MCT-AU
MCT-CA
MCT-GB
MCT-US
MCT-ZA

To view and use the theme for each region just navigate into each MCT-Region directory, enter the Theme sub-directory and double click the theme file.

Install Windows Vista using less than 512 MB of RAM

Everyone know, Windows Vista is resource hungry OS that require at least 512 MB of RAM to install. Here I am introducing a simple trick to install Windows Vista using less than 512 Mb of RAM but I recommed to increase or upgrade your RAM to run Windows Vista simple, easier and faster
1. Boot from Windows Vista DVD
2. Select your language, currency and keyboard setting and click NEXT.
3. At next screen click on Repair your computer and process next to get system Recovery Options.
4. Now click on Command prompt and run setup /nosyscheck and perform installtion.

Rearm Vista Activation period

Would you like to extend the activation period to the maximum 120 days instead of the 30 day period that is set by default? It is possible and legal to do this using the software licensing manager in Windows Vista. Simply run slmgr -rearm to get another 30 days. You can do this a maximum of three times before Microsoft blocks further extensions

Enable support for 4GB of RAM (or more) in Vista 32-bit

On a computer that has 4 GB of RAM, the System Properties dialog box and the System Information dialog box may report less memory than you expect. This problem occurs because the address space is limited to 4 GB in a 32-bit hardware environment. Memory may be relocated to make room for addresses that the basic input/output system (BIOS) reserves for hardware. However, because of this limitation, Windows Vista cannot access memory that is relocated above the 4 GB boundary.
Solution: Open an elevated Command Prompt, type BCDEdit /set pae ForceEnable and press Enter.
The pae parameter enables Physical Address Extension (PAE). On 32-bit versions of Windows, PAE is disabled by default. PAE is an addressing strategy that uses a page-translation hierarchy to enable systems with 32-bit addressing to address more than 4 GB of physical memory. PAE also supports several advanced system and processor features, such as Data Execution Prevention (DEP; "No execute"), Non-Uniform Memory Architecture (NUMA), and hot-add memory, so it is also used on computers with less than 4 GB of memory. PAE must be supported by the processor.
On a computer that supports hardware-enabled Data Execution Prevention (DEP), PAE is automatically enabled when DEP is enabled and automatically disabled when you disable DEP. To enable PAE when DEP is disabled, you must enable PAE explicitly:
Open an elevated Command Prompt.
Type BCDEdit /set nx AlwaysOff & BCDEdit /set pae ForceEnable and press Enter.
